have Arithmancy until tomorrow. I heard that Professor Vector's still in a strop about Edgecombe's essay being all in glittery pink. (To hear Edgecombe tell it, she doesn't know what possessed her--it's not even proper ink, it's more like a special drafting paint she bought for drawing. There's a charm to make it give off a moonglow in the dark, too.)

Anyway, I thought I'd just remind anyone who might not remember: Black is the only acceptable ink for narrative. Colours are for calculations. (I'll leave what Professor Vector thinks of sparkles or glow-in-the-dark paints to the imagination. Really, it's better that way.) (First-years, that doesn't apply to Potions formulae. The advanced rules there are completely different, as I'm sure Professor Slughorn would be happy to point out.)

While I'm on the subject of reminders: Please make sure you've got all your books and all your supplies for lessons throughout the day. Third-years, you ought to know by now that you've not enough time to go running all the way back to your dormitories between lessons.

And please remember that if you're coming back to the castle from Herbology or Care of Magical Creatures or any other activity that requires you to go outside, you can perform a very simple cleaning charm on your shoes and robe hems before you come inside.

Finally, it should go without saying but NO MAGIC in the corridors. That means no hexing, no jinxing, no curses, no spells of any kind. (Particularly not the kind that might be aimed at a fellow student!) (And don't think you can just blame everything on Peeves, either.)

Don't forget, Apparation lessons start tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.

I know a lot of CCF members were asking about having successfully Apparated over the summer. I asked Professor Vector. She said that the examiners are aware many of us can do it but they want us to at least go through the first lesson to make sure we've got the technique correct and haven't forgot how since then. They might be willing to let those people who are already of age test at the end of the day and apply for licences right there; everyone else will have to wait until we are legally old enough for the licence, but we might be able to get a waiver for the remainder of the lessons if we can prove we're safe.

(And no, Macmillan, the licence fee is not waived regardless of whether you Apparated at CCF or not.)

On behalf of all the students, our thanks to Professor Vector and all the Professors for their indulgence this week. Many of us are personally affected by the stirring events in Ireland and many others of us wish to stand in support of our friends and schoolmates who have relations across the sea.

Hearing the Minister address the people has, I'm sure, brought us all a measure of comfort. It's certainly bolstering to know that the Council's and MLE's quick actions saved hundreds of lives and avoided countless amounts of damage. As tragic as it was, it could have been worse.

And I know all my mates and I could not be more proud of our own Professors Lestrange and Dolohov, who were there in the thick of things, defending the wizards' way of life.

We'd also like to thank Madam Pomfrey and Madam Umbridge for their sensitive and understanding care for all those students who needed extra reassurance yesterday. As Prefects, we'd also like to remind everyone that we're here to help. If anyone should require an escort to the hospital wing, or someone to talk to, please don't hesitate to seek us out.

As Madam Umbridge so perceptively said, we all have to give our whole selves to the service of Our Lord and strive in all things to bring Him as much honour as the members of His Council have done over the last few days, and in the days to come.

Someone said the wireless has made a couple very short announcements that something's happened in Dublin.

I asked Kirke and he said Professor Vector had him walk you to the hospital wing. (Why Vector, anyway? Why not Hooch or Professor McGonagall?)

Are you all right? What's going on, do you know?

to look at the photographs, Sandoval. It was wizard to see you and hear about your programme. And for everything else. I know you're really busy with training, so it was doubly kind of you to let us come.

Your home is utterly nift, too. The tiles in that Arab room are gorgeous. And the fountain! It's so stupe, how the photographs hung suspended in the water like that. Parvati said it was good to see Honoria. And your father was ever so nice. It's too bad Orion didn't come say hello. But the rest was really amazing. And Parvati thought the Turkish coffee was ever so elegant.

I'm having a think about all we talked about, too. Your advice means a lot.

Has everyone else got their books yet? That DA textbook looks wicked. Practical Curses for Every Occasion? Nift. And who else is taking Arithmancy? I can't wait for that, either, because Professor Vector's really such an amazing Head of House and I've been looking forward to taking her class ever since first year.

I've been having trubble with the first quill Professor Vector gave me. Today when I was riting something to Parkinson it went all wonky and I tried sharpening it, but then it split. So I cut it higher and than I didnt have enough quill left to rite wtih.

So I had to go get another quill from Professor Vector. She wasnt two happy but she gave it to me.

Parvati and Lavender and I were planning to spend the day looking thru Professor Lockhart's books so we cuold ask him to tell one of his storys in Defence this week. (I would ask in my lesson and Parvati and Lavender would ask in theres.)  But then MacMillan posted and I dunno, the whole day just semed to go relly quick.

Maybe Professor Lockhart would run that chess tournament thingy that Perks mentioned? He's so handsome I hope Michael enters, if Perks gets it going. Maybe Draco would have more luck, tho.

Lavender thinks Parkinson is relly wierd, but then, she knows the Malfoys a little better than Parvati and me. Lavender's mum is working on a party with Mrs Malfoy and its to be at Kensington and ever so grand. I think my parents are going, too. I wonder what Mum's going to wear?

Okay I think this quill works alright now.
