alt_padma: (Sarcastic)
I bet you're happier as a Healer now than working as an Auror, with everyone dropping all over the Ministry. Is it true someone said they found a human foot in Scunthorpe that they think belonged to Minister Fudge? I know, he's supposed to have had an 'illness' but honestly, who believes that? And then there's Auror Hopkirk and what happened to her. I bet Mum's already Flooed you twice this week to tell you how much better off you are here at Hogwarts.

Have you heard from Pavs lately? She sent an owl and I can barely understand it. Something about Inderpal and how things are since Dover disappeared. Well, you know he used to send her all over for goods. And she's said more than once that the places she used to go have been either put under Fidelius or just plain razed by Our Lord's forces. So I don't blame her for feeling a little worried he's had some shady business practices, but honestly, it can't be anything more serious than that, can it?

Maybe if you're not busy tonight I'll bring her letter and show it to you and you can make sense of it. I swear if I didn't know better I'd say she thinks he's a smuggler or something, and she's afraid to say it out loud.

Honestly, like her own family would turn her in? She hasn't done anything! And even if he did have some contacts with smugglers, maybe now that Dover's cut off they'll lift some restrictions just so we can get fresh supplies. He might be in a good position to profit, even.

Anyway. You know she's never been particularly clever but this letter, you just have to read it for yourself.
alt_padma: (Surprised)
Seamus, have you read this morning's paper? All of it, I mean?

There's an item in the Commerce pages saying that Sharrow Bay on Ullswater's been closed. Sharrow Bay, isn't that where Pavs said she went for Inderpal just two weeks ago? I remember her saying she thought it was so odd that he sent her all the way there for their steamed mussels when they can get perfectly fine food in New London. And now the paper says the owner went missing sometime last week so they've had to shut down.

The thing is, Pavs sent me an owl this morning, too--with something similar. Her note says that a few months back, he recommended a jeweller in Yardley and she really liked her stock. So she went back last week hoping to find some presents, but it was gone. Burned down.

I think I'm going to write her for a list of places he's sent her. Madam Pince keeps the old Prophets for a while. Maybe it's worth looking into how many shops he frequents that aren't around anymore.
alt_padma: (Knowing)
I got your owl. You know how Dovs is doing these lectures and such? Well, even if you're not at all interested in the topics, you could come for those. I mean, Inderpal can't object, even if you don't think he would anyway, and then we can go and talk and he'll never know the difference.

Anyway, I'm still not sure what you think is so odd. Obviously he travels loads for work and he has loads of places to patronise. He's not building up piles of debt or anything, is he?

Oh, also, if you come up this Sunday, we can grab Seamus and talk to him about it, too.

Everything here is the same old boring stuff, especially compared to being at Erewash. It was really amazing, Pavs. I mean, it was frightening, but really exciting, too. School just doesn't come close, even with feathers disrupting supper and people writing all over the walls. In an odd way I'm grateful we were called out to the field, you know? I mean, Lana and Professor Desai and Dovs--even Seamus--were all sort of whinging on and on and on about how awful I was at duelling. And really, I'm not that dreadful, but being in battles like that is just different from anything we did at CCF. I mean, CCF was meant to approximate what it's like but really it's not the same at all. But because of Erewash, they all saw that I really am up to the job, you know? I mean, I may not ever be the sort of proper warlock that Auror Lestrange is, but honestly, who is?

So even though it was rather horrid, fighting those muggles like that, and sometimes scary, at least it was a chance to prove that I'm not completely naff. And yes, the dreams aren't nearly as bad as they were at first. Thanks. I'd be grateful if you never mention any of that stuff to Mum and Dad. Haruman might have some idea, I think--he wrote to me afterward, did I tell you?--but you know how Mum and Dad are, they'll just get all the wrong notions. Being on the Council really is the most important thing that's happened to our family. Sorry, I know they're still well proud of you getting married already, but honestly the advantages our family will have are so much more enhanced now that I'm on the Council. Not that Inderpal's not influential, or anything. I mean, I'm sure he is, and he's the luckiest husband in the Protectorate because he's got you.

But if Mum and Dad think it's all danger and nasty muggles trying to blow us up or set us on fire, they'll take away all the wrong sorts of ideas. It was bad enough that the papers had so much in them. (And that's odd, too, isn't it? I mean, the Prophet seems to have loads of unpleasantness in it nowadays. Does Inderpal think that the Wireless has more in its broadcasts lately that--well, that criticises Minister Fudge? Because the Prophet certainly does.)

Anyway. Come on Sunday if you can and we'll use the chance to talk. That way you don't have to get away for a whole Saturday in Hogsmeade. And let me know if you want Seamus's opinion, too, he's really good at figuring out whether there's anything suspicious in someone's actions. I'm sure Inderpal's not having an affair, though--I mean, you haven't even been married for six months! I mean, you're happy together, aren't you? And he's not--asking you to do things you don't want?

So I don't think that could be it. Still, you could ask Haruman if maybe he can talk to Inderpal sometime, man-to-man, you know, and see if he talks about anyone else. Or if he mentions knowing loads about gentlewizard's clubs and things like that. (I mean, I guess he could be attracted to some gori and has to hide it, but if that's the case, well, I think you'd probably be better off pretending not to know about it.)

Look, just come on Sunday, okay?
alt_padma: (Happy)
Pavs, I got your letter!

Yes, it would be spectacularly nift if you could come visit. The first Hogsmeade day is the 25th.

Things here are--all right. Being on the Council is really different from trying to be on the Council. It would have been so much easier to be Head Girl on top of it all, and Seamus really ought to have been Head Boy, because right now it's so awkward. I mean, Daphs tries, but she's far too concerned about everyone getting on together and not enough about maintaining discipline. There've been all these impossibly horrid incidents among the lower years, I mean, roommates who always got along suddenly fighting and squabbling about all sorts of things. And Lines of course just makes them recite poetry as a punishment (honestly, does he think they'll be so embarrassed they'll be afraid to make waves again? Does he even realise that he's the one people are laughing at?), and Daphne's so busy giving herself airs that she hardly notices when anything else is going on.

If Seamus and I had been Heads, we could have really showed the lower years what's what. We're not afraid to use Crucio if it's called for, you know? But the thing is, old Dovs made his choice, so he clearly thinks it's beneath the two of us to worry about petty infighting at school.

He opened this duelling studio--well, I'm sure you saw the announcement--and Seamus and Professor Desai and even Dovs himself have made it abundantly clear that I need loads of work. Imagine, I have to assign myself my own homework! It's really odd, and Seamus noticed too, how many people in our Defence and Noble Arts lessons are much better fighters than we would have thought. Well, you were in Gryffindor: Was Bundy ever all that? I know she's a pet of Weasel's but seriously, would you have thought she'd be top of the class, just from CCF? I suppose some people just take to it more than others. Anyway, Seamus seems to think we might be called upon to leave school now and then and help enforce Our Lord's peace, so I'm going to be practising loads in there. Between that and preparing for N.E.W.T.s, I'm almost glad I'm not Head Girl--though of course, if I were, I'd have the power to arrange things so that I had more help and more time to fit everything in as a result. (Actually, it's not a bad idea to see if I can get some of the younger ones to help, just based on my status as a Councilwitch--I mean, not with schoolwork, obviously, but all the other little things I need, you know, like making sure the bathroom's available whenever I need it or running to the library if I need a book, things like that.)

Oh, anyway, enough about all that. I want to hear how everything is going. I mean, you said Inderpal's good to you (and that's amazing about the clothes and all), but--are you sure he can afford everything? And all those trips to shops here and there.... Well, I'm sure he has contacts all over the realm, I mean, after all, he's always looking for new bands and personalities and such for the wireless programmes. So I don't think you should be so concerned if he takes you to Bath on Tuesday and Boston on Friday. Honestly, he's probably still just trying to impress you.

What does Mum have to say about all the expense? Have you talked to her?

But other than loads of travelling, you're happy? I mean, really happy?

Well, anyway, come to Hogsmeade and we'll catch up.

Love from,

Pads
alt_padma: (Sincere)
Thanks for the owl--exams are off to a good start and I'm sure it'll all be fine.

But your news! So you finally convinced Mum about Inderpal? That's wonderful, Pavs. How? I know you said it happened right after our birthday but tell me all about it! I want to know everything.

I just hope that doesn't mean she's holding that Mr Gowda in reserve for me, you know? I guess we'll handle it if it happens.

So when did you set the date? Not til I get home, right? I can't wait to see you and we'll talk for days and days.
alt_padma: ('splody)
Pav said your house-elf wouldn't admit her to see you.

Look.

It wasn't really me, last night. It was a spell or a potion or something. Someone else must have targetted me because of the competition.

So I didn't mean anything I said. Or to embarrass either of us. Or Draco.

If you didn't talk to Pav, you won't know that the spell made me so heartsick that I tried -- to kill myself when he kept rejecting me. Draco brought me to St Mungo's and then I had to talk to MLE and it's just been a horrible day all round.

They're finally satisfied that they've got whatever it was out of my system, so I'll be going home in a few minutes.

If you...if you wanted to come over, we could talk.
alt_padma: (Ravenclaw)
I'm at St M's. Draco brought me but then he left.

I don't blame him. I made such a fool of myself.

Lakshmi, I'm so tired. I couldn't even sleep last night, I was writing poetry and thinking about ways to win him for myself, or kill Daphne. (Omigosh, Daphne! She probably hates me, I was so horrid!)

They said it had to have been a love potion or a love compulsion but they can't ever be sure unless someone else comes in with the same exact problem. It wasn't one of the commercially available potions, the Healers said. MLE were here just to take a statement but the Junior Auror said not to expect much in the way of investigation. There just isn't anything to investigate.

Haruman's been talking to them and the Healers and to Mum. They want to keep me for a while in case I relapse. But Pav brought me my journal, at least. So maybe I can think of something to say to him. Thank you for saving my life, for a start.

It was horrible.

Oh, Rama! BLAISE!!!
alt_padma: (Happy)
as everyone else! But that doesn't mean that we can run rampant all over the school. Remember that there's a match tomorrow and the other years still have homework and revising.

But other than that, we've got every reason to have a party!

And regardless of the Quidditch outcome tomorrow, Pavs and I are inviting years 4-7 to celebrate our birthdays. We'll use the same room where we rehearsed the Revue. Just a little tea and cake and some music. Hope to see you there!
alt_padma: (pleased)
Daphs and I have been talking more about her musical idea. Lines, do you think Karo would be willing to help a bit, even if she is planning her wedding and all?

And Pav, Daphs asked if you'd speak to Madam Hooch about backing us up if she goes to Madam Umbridge about making it part of the YPL's activity for the year. Like the play only Madam Umbridge wouldn't have to lift her wand about it. I told her you and Lav could take care of Hooch.

Lines, I know you're excited for Saturday but we do need to think about History Club for Monday. Maybe something from the 19th Century when the conclaves of West Indian wizards took over the old Whitechapel area of New London? Or maybe you have other ideas.

(And I know you think the Omnioculars are a good idea so you'll be able to see their wandwork but honestly, we'll be indoors. You'll look like an idiot if you bring them. Seriously.)

Oh, Pav, incidentally, I checked with Gambol and Japes and they'll send us the seeds and candles and everything for Navratri next week. Gupta says he's got a few idols his parents sent with him, too. Rohani says she'll arrange for the space to be kept clear for the week, so we can leave it set up and don't have to clear it every night.
alt_padma: (loose)
looked lovely today, didn't it? With the sun out much of the day and just that little bit of fresh snow falling as we were all coming back? Almost as pretty as Christmastime.

Although perhaps it's down to having someone to walk with that makes it better. I guess it's true about Valentine's, that it's ever so much fun if you've got someone and utterly horrid if you haven't.

Lares, thanks for the butterbeer. And for being a good sport about Lav and Pav joining us. I'm glad you introduced us all to Nikolai, he's really very nice.

It's almost hard to believe we've got homework to do after a day like today. But I guess I'd better get back to it! Good thing I stopped in at MacGhille's Manuscripts. I found a copy of the Textbook of Rare Runes in really good condition. It's got a whole section on the glyphs of the Mayans.
alt_padma: (dressy)
Lav, Pav and I, along with Parkinson, Greengrass and Bones, want to invite all the girls to a party this Sunday. Music, manicures, makeovers and no men!

About half-eleven, isn't that what we said, Pansy? Up in the 4th floor classroom.
alt_padma: ('splody)
I thought we agreed no more quizzes!

And what in Merlin's name do you mean putting Davies and Page on that list of two-timers? And 'Anyone who dates Patil?' as if the two of them weren't enough? Even if you meant it as a misdirect, Pav, NOT FUNNY.

Honestly. What do you two think you're doing, putting that out in the middle of exams? And when we agreed we'd learned not to do it again?
alt_padma: (Happy)
Listen, starting next Sunday, Greengrass and I are going to get all the girls together for exercising - the sorts of calisthenics we've been doing from CCF.

I dunno if your Gryffindor boys are looking as self-satisfied as ours in Ravenclaw but it seems Zach's 'invitation' this afternoon was for a boys' club.

Well, we can't let them have all the fun, right?

So don't tell anyone - even Finnigan - what it is we're getting up to while they play Snap and pretend to be grown men. But let's find a spot and make sure we're all well fit when those French boys get here!
alt_padma: (Smug)
about the CCF.

I was accepted! But Parvati wasn't.

I don't think she's too upset, except that we won't be together for the whole summer.

The letter says I have to report on the 4th - is that what they told everyone? Or are we split up into groups like last summer?

Who else made it?
alt_padma: (Smug)
You'll NEVER guess what happened yesterday! It was so hard not to laugh I thought I'd bust.

You know how we girls went out on a shopping day and all (which is why I didn't bother to invite you, you'd have been bored squib), and of course Parkinson insisted on bringing along her pet Perks. Well. Perks couldn't come unless she could also babysit Stretton's sister as well. Honestly, can you imagine? Gemma has a nanny but the Strettons realise they've got a good thing when they see it. Perks as a free live-in governess, I mean, it's perfect. Honestly it's the kind of thing I could see her doing her whole life. No one's going to want to marry her, so she'll have to raise other people's children, won't she?

Anyway. Well, Perks was feeling all smug because for once in her life, she had the dosh for the outing. I mean, the Strettons gave her gold so she could pay for things Gemma wanted, like ice creams and all. But Gemma wanted to get her nails lacquered along with everyone else's, and while the witch who did the manicures thought Gemma was so adorable that she put hers on for free, she had to charge Perks full price, of course, just like the rest of us. And when Gemma saw what Parvati was getting - she got the unicorn running across a moonlit meadow, I knew she would - well, Gemma just wouldn't rest until Perks got the same thing! (And it looks ridiculous on her, really. Although I think she did convince Gemma she couldn't have exactly the same thing as Parvati, so she just got the unicorn running across a plain pink background - yes, pink, because that's Gemma's favourite colour. And it's the same shade of pink that the witch made Gemma's nails, too.) Actually, it's Parvati's favourite colour too, and you should have seen how Gemma lit up at that! She's still very attached to Perks, of course, but then Perks is round her all the time, so it's not surprising.

Well, after that, and the ice creams we bought with lunch and all, she had used up all Gemma's pocket money. So then we were browsing through the mad fabulous second-hand shops they've got in Soho - you know, the ones all along Oxford street? - well, she saw a charm bracelet that she just loved. I mean, you could tell she just thought it well gorgeous. It was rather beautiful, have to admit, but like the nail lacquer, not something I can really see Perks wearing, you know? But anyway, it was real gold, wasn't it, and all the charms were bespelled so they wouldn't get lost or broken, and it was easily more than her dad probably makes in a year fixing up other people's broken whatnots, let alone anything the Strettons would see fit to buy for her. Gemma was all over getting it for her and then Perks had to explain to her how they didn't have enough Galleons for it. I felt bad for Gemma but really, doesn't she realise that her babysitter is poor as a mudblood?

Oh, but the best part was when Haruman met up with us to take us all to supper. Perks was supposed to go back to the Strettons' so we wouldn't have Gemma with us. Only when she made her excuse, that Gemma had to go home for her bath, Gemma piped right up about how her mama had told them they could stay out all day, and since it wasn't yet dark that meant they didn't have to leave yet! Well, lucky for us, Haruman was just as amused as anything because Gemma really is a very cute little thing, so he said it would be no problem to add them in to supper. And supper was really great, too - he took us to Masala and it was great - except that Naani's saag is better than theirs.

But the funny thing about it was that Gemma had to sit between Perks and Parvati! I think Perks may be in for a surprise now that Gemma's seen what real older girls are like. Of course, she's her own sibs at home, but that's not quite the same thing, is it?

Anyway. Back to school, huh? Have you had a good holiday? Ready for the play? I'm getting so nervous and it's still days away. I'm more worried about this than exams, I think!
alt_padma: (profile)
Mum said I ought to write and thank you and your mother for inviting me Sunday. So thank you. I guess she figured that your mum thinks we're mates or something.

Anyway, Gloss House is sort of nice, I guess. I mean, it's in a very pretty spot, isn't it? With the mountains and all. Did your mum make all those favours?

Oh, I don't know if you noticed, but Smith and Diggory and a few of the other boys kept nicking glasses of punch. The grown-up one, I mean. And I think they nicked one of your step-father's cigars from the den when you gave us all the tour. I know I saw Fleet and Bobolis sneaking off near the stables. Bet it made them really sick.

Do you know Lettice Frobisher? Her sister Vicky's in Gryffindor and Parvati says that Vicky's really sick, too. May not come back to Hogwarts she's so sick. Only not with Black's Plague or anything. Lettice was talking to Euterpe Bobolis and also to Chambers, and they said that Lettice is so worried about her - Vicky, I mean. Thin as a rail - did you ever notice? Her parents took her to one of those clinics, only not to reduce her more, to make sure that she eats and puts some weight back on. Well, anyway, Chambers was asking Lettice about Vicky, how she's doing, and they decided they'd go in to New London shopping and maybe find out if they could visit her to cheer her up.

And I thought, well, maybe some of the girls in our year might like to meet up in New London, too. It'd get us away from home for a while It'd give us a chance to do some shopping that's not in Hogsmeade. I mean, not that there's anything wrong with Hogsmeade but it's no New London, right?

Well, I asked my mum and she said it'd be fine as long as there's at least half a dozen of us (and it has to be even so no one goes off alone. Honestly!). And she thinks you and I are mates, so, she wanted me to ask you as well. If you wanted to have Perks along then once we're in New London, you know, you two could split off and do whatever you like, and we'd all just have to meet up later wherever we agree. Probably Fortescue's or something. So that if any of our parents pick us up or meet us, it looks like we've been together.

Mum's got this notion that if there are six or eight or ten of us it'll be all right and no one will abduct us or anything. But really it'll be Haruman who takes us and picks us up. He even said he'd take us all to supper, with some mates of his.

So are you interested? You don't have to say yes. I just thought you and Perks might want to get into town for a day.

Also I know it's April now, and that's really near to the time those girls got killed and Sanji and everything, and maybe you want something else to do and think about besides all that. I know I do.
alt_padma: (concentrating)
What happened in Transfiguration this morning?

Parvati tried to tell me but she was too upset to make a lot of sense. She said something about Professor Carrow ranting at the end of the lesson? And she was pretty sure he was going to Cruciate her?

She doesn't want me to write to Mum and Dad, but I think maybe we ought to do. What if he picks up the next lesson right where he left off?
alt_padma: (Happy)
It was snitch of you to have the bunch of us over yesterday. Thank Mr Rosier again, will you?

I do wish the Hogwarts crew had been able to come as well. You would have liked the game we played, Malfoy especially, I think. Hooper brought it. It's called Illusionary. Have you heard of it? Well, you divide into teams and there's a stack of cards with words on, like 'muggle camp' and 'transfiguration' and 'London' and 'snake' and all sorts of things. And there are some props you can use, but you don't have to use them if you don't want to do. Well, each person on your team takes it in turns being the one to get the others to guess what your word is. But you have to make an illusion that illustrates your word to get them to guess, and you can't talk, of course. It was great fun. Thomas was the best at sketching the illusions in the air, of course, but Page was really good at making the props into whatever he wanted.

Well, anyway, then Thomas wanted to go skating, so we did that before tea, which was really not tea at all, but chocolate! But the game had been so much fun that we kept casting spells out on Mr Rosier's duck pond. Oh, and Hooper taught us this completely nift charm he knew, to make illusions and shapes and such out of his breath when it fogged up in the air. He must have pracised forever to be able to do things like that unicorn he made for Parvati. We all tried, but it's difficult to make the shapes quickly enough. I think Lav was getting the hang of it, though!

I think Page really enjoyed getting to speak with Mr Rosier in the library while we were off touring the house again. I know I've been before but we've still not seen the whole place! It just keeps going. I can't believe you said it's smaller than your family's main castle in Ireland, though, Finnigan. I dunno what I'd do with so many rooms! But I knew we'd lose Page in the library. It's quite my favourite room of Mr Rosier's, too. I know it's not quite as large as Hogwarts' library but then, Mr Rosier doesn't need multiple copies of things or quite so many books that no one ever wants to read, does he? It was really kind of him to loan Page that copy of Command of Thought, as well. I'm sure it'll be really helpful for his Dark Arts unit on Curses.

Mr Rosier was right about getting to know some of the others better. I never knew Robins was so witty! Or that Cuthbert and Page would bore us all with broom care as Quidditch strategy, ha-ha! It was loads of fun and now it won't seem like so long before we're all on the train back to school.
alt_padma: (concentrating)
There's something I've been wanting to tell you. But I had to get permission from Lav and Parvati and Belinda and Su before I did. And I was going to tell you in person on the train tomorrow, but Page asked if I'd sit with him and I said I would - most of the way, anyway.

But - well, you may have already figured this out, but we all worked on that quiz. It wasn't finished yet. It fell out of Dunstan's bag and she didn't notice. I was going to tell you about it before we shared it round, see, and we were only going to share it with people who would have found it amusing. I mean, at least parts of it.

And it was Page's idea to put you in the girls' blouse box. He said you and Hooper would think it was funny, I dunno why. Anyway. And that's why the other one - we were putting some things in to try to keep people from knowing who wrote it, right, and like I said we weren't done. But I would have told you ahead of time.

Anyway. It didn't go over as well as it was supposed to do - because it wasn't done right, mostly - but it didn't feel right not telling you the truth. Especially since, we talked about it last night, me and Lav and Parvati and we want to see if the six of us can meet up in New London or somewhere over the hols.

Parvati and I are going to stay with Lav for a few days after Christmas, and we thought that'd be a good time to get out and away from Loony and because her parents aren't as strict as ours about going out, you know. And that way I could give you and Page your Christmas presents (which I haven't got yet but I will once we're home). What do you think? Are you and Hooper up for it? Would Mr Rosier let you go? I think we could really reasonably split off this time, not like in Hogsmeade, if you liked, because no one will know any different.

Well, let me know. That is, if you're not going to tell me to get stuffed because of the other thing.
alt_padma: (Earrings)
brilliant! Lana, it was absolutely snitch to see you, really! It was so unexpected. But I'm glad you had a chance to see how well we're doing, despite the Dementors and all. And you can see I've been thinking a lot about how much you've helped me with your advice and how I want to make you proud of all of us in Ravenclaw Corner.

Lav got a load of her shopping done and Parvati and I picked up a few things, too. Thanks so much, Finnigan, Hooper, and of course Page, for being such gallant escorts! We all had a lovely time.

It was a little disappointing that we had to come back so early, what with the patrols starting at dark. But on the other hand, it was really quite cold, even with silk under the layers. And it's good to know that the Ministry are increasing all their attention to finding enemies and traitors. I mean, it's always important, but if they can catch Macnair and Snape and stop those horrid people who say Black's alive even though his body's on display in New London, well - it'd be nice if we didn't have Dementors for the whole year!

I'm not at all sure I've got the patience for another week of lessons before we go home for hols. I know we'll get through them and it's good to learn, of course. But this weekend sort of gave me the taste for being home and doing real shopping and all. At least this week Karoline will have the scripts ready for people to read! And we get to try out for the play when we get back. I know she's been working hard on it and it's going to be nift.

Marvolo, it's too bad you couldn't come out, but I hope you had another jolly tea or something to keep your spirits up.
