utterly brill! Mum saw our new lacquer and the bag I got and Parvati's new comb and simply adores them, too. And it was so nift to just gad about, even without buying anything. I thought we might never get Parkinson back from that record shop.

Perks, Parvati says Gemma can plait her hair anytime she likes! Did you decide against that bracelet, after all? I know some people don't like anything round their wrists when they're writing. Or the jingling bothers them. It's probably just as well you didn't get it.

Supper was lovely, too! I didn't know that Burrow and O'Flaherty had both gone into Healers' training. It was a surprise to see them - Haruman usually doesn't talk much about his mates.

(Lav, did you see the way that Chadwick smiled at you? He's well fit, isn't he?)

Oh, and has anyone seen today's Prophet? There's a huge piece about Auror Crouch - and they mentioned Sandoval prominently, too! I knew she'd be brilliant as an Auror! 'Presence and grace under heavy hexfire' and then later it said she was 'instrumental' in apprehending the traitors. I'm keeping our copy so when she's head of the Aurors one day, I can say I knew her back at school. Well done, Lana! Ravenclaw Corner is well proud of you!

Daphs, you might want to read the article, too, because it does talk about Auror Crouch's career and some of the things he's done for the Lord Protector. Plus there's his mum, which might be useful to you when playing that scene with Chang. (Actually there's a sidebar that's got a bunch of facts and trivia about him, like how he showed his magic the first time and when he joined MLE and like that. And you might want to read it, if you haven't. I think there's more there than in that Rise of the Protector book Ptolemy found for us all!)

I don't know about anyone else, but even though it's been lovely to get away from school, I think yesterday was the best part of the holiday. I can't believe we've got to pack up now and go back. I hope our lacquer lasts as long as they said it would. We paid the extra two sickles for the hardening and strengthening spell, too, so that it should last through the end of term.

Ugh, and now Aunt Sivarti wants us to go help make supper. It's not even time for lunch!
alt_padma: (Earrings)
Lav,

So far we've got Dunstan, you, Su Li and Parkinson (I know, but mum sort of insisted). And Parkinson's asking Perks, which I said she could do because I knew she'd get shirty if I said it wouldn't be, but she doesn't think Perks will be able to come.

And I've asked Greengrass, too, but then there's the question of whether she'll want Bulstrode along. I suppose if Perks doesn't come, Bulstrode could. But then we can't ask Morag and you know she gets sulky when she's left out of things. Why does everything have to be difficult? We only wanted to have a fun day in town without Dementors floating everywhere.

I really wish Finnigan could come along, he's always good for laughs, but as it's all girls that would just be torturous for him!

Anyway, so Thursday. And you're coming over to stay tomorrow night, still, right?
alt_padma: (Hm)
What did Longbottom do?

Or - I can't believe I'm even saying this - did he even have to do anything? Professor Carrow has been so difficult lately.
alt_padma: (Happy)
It was snitch of you to have the bunch of us over yesterday. Thank Mr Rosier again, will you?

I do wish the Hogwarts crew had been able to come as well. You would have liked the game we played, Malfoy especially, I think. Hooper brought it. It's called Illusionary. Have you heard of it? Well, you divide into teams and there's a stack of cards with words on, like 'muggle camp' and 'transfiguration' and 'London' and 'snake' and all sorts of things. And there are some props you can use, but you don't have to use them if you don't want to do. Well, each person on your team takes it in turns being the one to get the others to guess what your word is. But you have to make an illusion that illustrates your word to get them to guess, and you can't talk, of course. It was great fun. Thomas was the best at sketching the illusions in the air, of course, but Page was really good at making the props into whatever he wanted.

Well, anyway, then Thomas wanted to go skating, so we did that before tea, which was really not tea at all, but chocolate! But the game had been so much fun that we kept casting spells out on Mr Rosier's duck pond. Oh, and Hooper taught us this completely nift charm he knew, to make illusions and shapes and such out of his breath when it fogged up in the air. He must have pracised forever to be able to do things like that unicorn he made for Parvati. We all tried, but it's difficult to make the shapes quickly enough. I think Lav was getting the hang of it, though!

I think Page really enjoyed getting to speak with Mr Rosier in the library while we were off touring the house again. I know I've been before but we've still not seen the whole place! It just keeps going. I can't believe you said it's smaller than your family's main castle in Ireland, though, Finnigan. I dunno what I'd do with so many rooms! But I knew we'd lose Page in the library. It's quite my favourite room of Mr Rosier's, too. I know it's not quite as large as Hogwarts' library but then, Mr Rosier doesn't need multiple copies of things or quite so many books that no one ever wants to read, does he? It was really kind of him to loan Page that copy of Command of Thought, as well. I'm sure it'll be really helpful for his Dark Arts unit on Curses.

Mr Rosier was right about getting to know some of the others better. I never knew Robins was so witty! Or that Cuthbert and Page would bore us all with broom care as Quidditch strategy, ha-ha! It was loads of fun and now it won't seem like so long before we're all on the train back to school.
alt_padma: (Earrings)
Well, everyone who celebrates, anyway!

I hope you all got the things you wanted and maybe a few nice surprises too.

I know I did!

Dad says with all the presents we sent and all the owls bringing parcels since we got home and this morning, you'd never know it's just a plain old day for us.

Anyway though, thanks for those who remembered us and Finnigan, Page, Hooper, Lav, we'll see you soon, yeah?

Lav, mum says to ask yours when it's okay for us to Floo over - Monday, right?
alt_padma: (concentrating)
There's something I've been wanting to tell you. But I had to get permission from Lav and Parvati and Belinda and Su before I did. And I was going to tell you in person on the train tomorrow, but Page asked if I'd sit with him and I said I would - most of the way, anyway.

But - well, you may have already figured this out, but we all worked on that quiz. It wasn't finished yet. It fell out of Dunstan's bag and she didn't notice. I was going to tell you about it before we shared it round, see, and we were only going to share it with people who would have found it amusing. I mean, at least parts of it.

And it was Page's idea to put you in the girls' blouse box. He said you and Hooper would think it was funny, I dunno why. Anyway. And that's why the other one - we were putting some things in to try to keep people from knowing who wrote it, right, and like I said we weren't done. But I would have told you ahead of time.

Anyway. It didn't go over as well as it was supposed to do - because it wasn't done right, mostly - but it didn't feel right not telling you the truth. Especially since, we talked about it last night, me and Lav and Parvati and we want to see if the six of us can meet up in New London or somewhere over the hols.

Parvati and I are going to stay with Lav for a few days after Christmas, and we thought that'd be a good time to get out and away from Loony and because her parents aren't as strict as ours about going out, you know. And that way I could give you and Page your Christmas presents (which I haven't got yet but I will once we're home). What do you think? Are you and Hooper up for it? Would Mr Rosier let you go? I think we could really reasonably split off this time, not like in Hogsmeade, if you liked, because no one will know any different.

Well, let me know. That is, if you're not going to tell me to get stuffed because of the other thing.
alt_padma: (Earrings)
brilliant! Lana, it was absolutely snitch to see you, really! It was so unexpected. But I'm glad you had a chance to see how well we're doing, despite the Dementors and all. And you can see I've been thinking a lot about how much you've helped me with your advice and how I want to make you proud of all of us in Ravenclaw Corner.

Lav got a load of her shopping done and Parvati and I picked up a few things, too. Thanks so much, Finnigan, Hooper, and of course Page, for being such gallant escorts! We all had a lovely time.

It was a little disappointing that we had to come back so early, what with the patrols starting at dark. But on the other hand, it was really quite cold, even with silk under the layers. And it's good to know that the Ministry are increasing all their attention to finding enemies and traitors. I mean, it's always important, but if they can catch Macnair and Snape and stop those horrid people who say Black's alive even though his body's on display in New London, well - it'd be nice if we didn't have Dementors for the whole year!

I'm not at all sure I've got the patience for another week of lessons before we go home for hols. I know we'll get through them and it's good to learn, of course. But this weekend sort of gave me the taste for being home and doing real shopping and all. At least this week Karoline will have the scripts ready for people to read! And we get to try out for the play when we get back. I know she's been working hard on it and it's going to be nift.

Marvolo, it's too bad you couldn't come out, but I hope you had another jolly tea or something to keep your spirits up.
alt_padma: (History Club)
I've been thinking some more about what Sandoval told me, you know, and I'm going to tell Page that if he wants to go on we'll have to have other mates along - at least for a little while. I want to be sure that no one thinks we've been snogging non-stop for the last two weeks when we haven't even tried it once!

Anyway, I think if it's going to work like Sandoval says it should then I have to have other mates to ask along. I mean, Page is welcome in Ravenclaw Corner, but I don't exactly want to be with him only with Ravenclaw Corner folks about! And I think it would work better with not just a single chaperone, either. I mean, if Seamus and Page and I were together, then it could turn into someone saying that I was snogging both of you. And if Lavender were along but no one else, then people could think we're both snogging Page!

But then I had a brilliant idea, which is that if we pretended to double-date it would take care of everything. No one would think it untoward and no one would be able to make up stories, I wouldn't be embarrassed in front of Ravenclaw Corner and Page wouldn't feel like I'm putting him off. And you two aren't about to start snogging each other, so no one would think that you're just coming along so we can all mess about. And Finnigan, you could ask Hooper if you wanted and then you could revise as well.

You don't mind, do you? I mean, not all the time, because there's Parvati and Corner and others to come along, too, but once in a while?
alt_padma: (Earrings)
Lav, may I borrow your gold hairband for Wednesday? The one that sprinkles gold-dust all down the back?

You'll never guess what happened just before Defence today. We were coming in and the 4th years were leaving. And Page asked if I'd step aside with him for a minute.

He asked me to work with him on his Future Interrogators' project for next term, and he wanted to know if I'd meet him one night this week to go over the case study choices and pick one. He thought maybe tomorrow because he's got Astronomy late anyway, but I asked if it'd be okay to meet on Wednesday between History and our Astronomy lesson - because then I'd have time to get the ribbon from you if that's okay.

Grant Page! Asked me! To spend time with him! And not in Ravenclaw Corner or at the library - I mean, the library will basically be closed by the time History Club is done. And if we stay up all the way until Astronomy that's almost like a real date. Almost. I wonder if he'll walk me there?

I mean, I'm sure he doesn't think it's a date. It can't be a proper date, really, can it? But still. He asked me.

The only thing that's bad is that talking to him made me a tiny bit late for Defence. I wrote Su Li a note to tell her why I was late and then Belinda wanted to see it too. And when she wrote back to ask me something about Page, Professor Lestrange saw and burst the note into confetti. I think he was mostly just disappointed that we weren't completely riveted to his lecture, but honestly, he could've been talking about defeating Dumbledore and we would have been just as distracted. At least he didn't read it out loud, or give us a detention, though, so that's okay. (That's why I wrote to him, in case you're wondering.)

Anyway, if it's okay to borrow, could you bring the ribbon tomorrow and I'll get it from you? I promise I'll give it right back.
alt_padma: (Smug)
interesting party. Thanks for inviting us. I was a little surprised when so many grown-ups showed up, though. Especially Mrs Lestrange I guess that's sort of like Harry's party was, too.

The band was really good, anyway. I love that it's possible to dance kathak to 'Our Borders Are Strong' - it was fun teaching everyone some of the moves.

I hope you like the gloves. Mum says they're good for touring flights, they'll keep your hands warm if you're in the air a long time. Parvati put in the owl treats and the book on owl care because we know you just got an owl too. Anyway, I hope they'll be useful.

We'd been staying with Lavender for a few days, but we went home after the party. Haruman's taking us for our books on Wednesday, though, and Lav will come too so we'll see her again. Plus Sandoval invited me over on Thursday to see the photos from her party. So I think the week will go pretty quickly. And then only a couple more weeks left before school starts. I certainly hope this year will be quieter than last!
alt_padma: (Serious)
I haven't heard back from Sandoval. I expect she's really really busy.

How was the week without the Lunatic? I'm sorry she's coming home soon. But do you think your parents might have us, anyway? I know Parvati wrote to you yesterday. Have they said yes anything yet?

Lav, they had such a row last night! Mum's all upset with Dad because he's been playing in the orchestra more and more and producing less. And it doesn't pay as well, first off, and it's not as responsible, second, or influential. No one notices a cellist but a producer is important, you know? And she's got this idea that if he made himself 'indispensible' at the second wireless station, the one Mr Malfoy mentioned? Well, she's got this idea that if Dad made himself one of the people really running things there, he could 'make something of himself.' Ooh, Dad got so cross at that! He said a good deal about how he provides fine for us, and it's not her place to tell him how to make money. Mum said she made more in a month than he does in a year, and without her they'd never be invited to snitch parties and we'd never have been able to go to Harry's birthday, and all. She said it's down to her and he's shirking. He didn't like that at all.

Then he said...he said that she needn't bother trying to make so much because we've enough now, and it's not like they've got a chance at the Repopulation Rewards anymore. And that if she didn't work so hard at the studio or try hobnobbing with Narcissa Malfoy so much, perhaps the house would be in better order - and they could work on having another son.

Mum looked like he'd slapped her. He didn't really, of course, but she looked gobsmacked. And she said that as far as she was concerned they'd never have more children since he couldn't hold on to the last one they had.

Then Dad Apparated out. And Mum just...she started cooking. At ten at night. This morning she told us to clean all the house and Dad's still not home. She said he'd gone to work but I don't know if that's so.

Lav. I think Haruman wants to get his own place so we can stay there with him instead of Mum and Dad. They're both going mad, I think.

So will you ask your parents? I'll try Belinda next, if we can't, but I think her whole family are sill on holiday at that country house in the Cotswolds.
alt_padma: (Default)
the most exciting birthday party ever - even more than Draco's, and that's saying something.

I mean, we knew it was going to be fun. Getting facials and manicures and sleeping over at the Browns', and all - that was bound to be completely stupe. But it was so much more than anyone expected!

For starters, there were fireworks and little celebrations going on all over New London last night. Mr Brown even sent up sparklers from his wand in the garden for us all. And Mrs Brown gave us ice creams even though it was after bedtime. And we listened to the wireless reports and then we started comparing the bracelets my Mum made (oh, you should see them! They're like the ones Sally-Anne made all the Slytherin girls at end of term, only they're pretty and they've got spells on so they can do nift things, as well as useful spells like anti-loss and one type even has a direction charm on it).

Well, the party wasn't all overshadowed by Sirius Black's capture and then the excitement while we were all waiting for him to get caught again and then Mrs Lestrange saying she'd killed him and then looking for his body (which is sort of ghastly if you think about it, but honestly he was a menace, so it's too good for him, in some ways) and all that. I mean, the Browns let us listen to the wireless nearly all night, and we all fell asleep in the sitting room and finally Mr Brown told us all to go on up to bed, but then we sort of all woke back up again and we stayed up telling stories about Mr Macnair and the other escaped convicts (they say Dippet can conjure lethifolds and that's how he gets his victims!). And then we started talking about Mrs Lestrange and how the Auror who was injured was the one who we met - the one who worked on Sanji's kidnapping, I mean - and how we really hoped she'd be okay because she was really nice, and she tried hard to find out what happened even though it turned out...well, the way it did.

Did everyone listen to the Minister's address? My Dad was there when he came to give it, he said it was completely nift. Well, he said it was a huge honour, but that means it was nift. And the Minister even said something to him about Sanji, and he asked how we're getting on (we're fine, is the answer. I mean, it's weird being home and not having him about, but it's not as awful as it was when it first happened).

And now there's more celebrating again tonight. I guess there's a big party going on at Buckingham, because we can see the fireworks from the garden. I wonder if Mrs Lestrange is going to get a medal or anything? She ought, even if she couldn't bring him back alive to stand trial. Though I'm not sure how he could have - I mean, I can't think of anything he could have said that would have possibly made up for all the trouble he caused. And he doesn't seem like the type would would have apologised, even though he was dead wrong about so much.

Anyway, Lavender, even without the news keeping us all glued like a sticking charm, the party was snitch and Parvati and I just wanted to say we love you, and happy birthday, and you know we'll never, ever forget it.

Oh, and I can't wait for the party your parents are going to throw for the YPL trip, but this was really stupe to be just us girls. I mean, I know you and Parvati get to stay up in your dorms all the time, and I can with Belinda and Morag, but this way we were all together. And I'm sure we'll be together for the YPL, too!
alt_padma: (Hm)
and it's sort of hard to think that it's been that long. It doesn't feel that long at all.

Our birthday is coming up next week, but now all I can think of is it'll be a month after. I guess it'll always feel like that, now. A little. My aunt says her grandfather died on her mum's birthday, and ever since her mum could never be one hundred percent happy about her birthday, because she had to think about her father, too.

Lav, I know what you mean about things changing. But I guess that's what things do. And it'll be all right, you'll see. Trust me, you don't know her well because she's not in your common room all the time, but Lovegood's not that much bother. No one pays her much mind in Ravenclaw, that's for certain.

The Model Wizengamot is really interesting, though. And what's really amazing is, I think they had planned that we'd be doing it basically on our own, you know, because of the quarantine. But since it's been lifted they told us that some real Interrogators are going to watch later this week and tell us what they thought of how we did the job. Yesterday was opening statements (each side gets to make a speech). Today we're hearing testimony from the witnesses - and the Interrogators get to try to poke holes in their stories or make them remember details that help prove guilt. The defenders also have time to try, but they don't have the same kind of latitude that the Interrogators have. I know that in the model, we're switching sides - I mean, there are two cases, so in the next case, the people being Interrogators will be the defenders - but I think it's much better to be an Interrogator than a defender no matter what the case is. It just seems like most people who face Wizengamot charges are guilty, anyway.

Though there are different kinds of cases, of course. This one's a pretty simple one.

It's based on the trial of a wizard named Stalk who was found guilty of imbe embezl embezzling a lot of gold from the Daily Prophet in the 1850's. And it was really clear that he did it, once he got caught.

But the case we're starting tomorrow is a little more complicated. It's about a witch who used to lure muggles to her cottage and then made them work for her. And when she was done, she used them for potions ingredients and things. And when she was caught by a bunch of muggles, they wanted to burn her, but she got away, but then the Aurors told her she had to stop because it was making all the muggles hunt for the rest of us. Well, obviously, that part's not a problem anymore. But then this all happened for real in 1690, so we've updated the case a little. Now she's stealing muggles from the camps, you see, and there's a part of the case where - well, I don't want to give it away. You'll have to come on Thursday and see.

Meanwhile, Ravenclaw Corner is mostly back. There aren't many fifth-years and the ones who do go there have been keeping themselves scarce this week, with OWLs. I guess Sandoval feels pretty good about her NEWTs, though, but she's probably just more relieved that it's over. Johns says she never wants to go through that again.

Oh, and Orion Sandoval says he's heard that they are allowing the Apparition instructors from the Ministry to come up next week, after the Wizengamot is over, to teach the sixth-years who are eligible for their tests. Troy says he reckons Sandoval's worried he'll splinch himself, but Dames thinks he's just excited.
alt_padma: (Hm)
Could...Could you meet us at the bottom of the astronomy tower?

Lavender ran off and we're not sure where.

Oh.

Parvati thinks she hears her. We might need a little help, though. Something's not quite right.
alt_padma: (Ravenclaw)
Especially after seeing what Mrs Malfoy wrote last night.

Still, whoever put up that banner: well, it's a clever turn of phrase, but I think it was in horribly poor taste. And not just because it was so rude to me, even though I know that's what some people think! I just think...it's really horrid to suggest that what happened to me has anything to do with the attacks on Marvolo's enemies, or anything. Or that anyone might think I'm disloyal, because of course that's utterly daft.

Anyway, Madam Pomfrey gave me this creme stuff that I have to put on my scalp twice a day, but it'll take a few days before my hair comes back, so it's only temporary.  It was still a particularly low trick, and I'm sure I don't know what I did to deserve being singled out like that! I still have my suspicions about who was behind it - but I guess since it happened overnight it's hard to prove anything. Professor Acton says that there aren't too many curses that don't take effect right away, so someone probably put a hex bag under my pillow, or something. Maybe they fooled the elves into thinking it was just a sachet? I'll be sure to check before I go to bed tonight!

In the meantime, thanks to everyone who's decided to wear a scarf, it's really nift to see them all. (And Stretton, you can just go soak in the lake, don't think you're fooling anyone with that scarf. I can still read, and that oh-so-funny little marquee just makes you out as a even more of a berk.)

Professor Carrow rather surprised me in Transfiguration today, he was really sympathetic. Not that I'd have expected him to laugh, or anything, but usually he doesn't really seem to care about what happens among us kids, unless it affects his classroom directly. But then maybe after Malfoy's mudblood went all weird he's noticing more than usual. Anyway, thanks, Professor, for being so kind about it all.

Oh, and Malfoy, I'm really, really sorry about what happened with your mudblood. It must be terribly disappointing not to be able to rely on him for anything, or to get all fretful that he's going to go crazy on you when you least expect it. I would have said something last night, but I guess I just wasn't in the mood to comment on anything, just then.

I only want to say one other thing about Lavender's mum giving her back her journal, and that's that she knew Lavender was feeling ever so upset that she'd forgot it in the first place. I mean, our journals are even more important now, because it's getting harder to send owls in and out, and all, but even without that, I think these journals are just so amazing and important. No other place in the world has them, and like Mrs Malfoy says it's proof that the Lord Protector cares about us all and wants us to be able to show him, every day, how we feel and what we think. And plus, it's like having your friends with you, all the time, no matter whether they're in the same room or even the same county. I don't think I'd ever want to be parted from my journal!

Well, I should get started on the Astronomy chart from last night's observation. Oh, and Dunstan, I meant it when I said I'd help you with the research for the Muggle Studies essay. I'll be in Ravenclaw Corner the rest of the afternoon, until time for supper.

alt_padma: (Default)
my other pair of barrettes? I can't find them on my nightstand and I think maybe you've packed them already. And I think you have my gold spiral earrings, too?

Also, I found another copy of the last issue of Witch Weekly - is it yours, Lavender? Or Daphne's? There's one last unopened Robe Pet. Does anyone want it for the train?

Oh, ha-ha

Professor Vector said that every year someone tries to tell her why ravens are like writing desks - I told Linus that the 3rd-years were having us on, but he was so sure we could get 100 points for Ravenclaw.

And by the way, Finnigan, you completely deserved what Parvati and Lavender did. Honestly.

Boys are such morons.

(Just for the record, no, Chambers and Bradley did not push me into a bathroom cubicle and seal it. That was Su Li, and we don't look a thing alike, so stop asking about it, Smith!)
alt_padma: (profile)
Today I asked Professor Lockhart how soon he thinks they'll catch that horrible Black fellow who keeps invaiding our journals.

He said they were sure to find him and if he was posting to say that they haven't yet, it must be because they came close. He said that if he weren't teaching, he was sure he'd be able to discover Black's hiding place in a trice.

But my brother says Black's a dangerous criminel and he wants to kill the Lord Protector. Professor Lockhart must be very brave if he would go after someone like that single-handed! But then I guess he's done so many brilliant things that catching Black seems like its not much of a task.

I dont know why everyone is so worried about Potions when weve also got Charms and Transfiguration and Herbology to get through, too. I mean, Potions is basically following recipies, but Charms and Transfiguration really take concintration.

Morag and Belinda are getting much more excited about Christmas than their exams. I'm just looking forward to going home for a bit, even if Haruman will probably call me 'Parvati' just to be annoying and Sanji will not want to let me or Parvati out of his sight.

Lavender, did your mum talk to you about maybe sleeping over during the holidays? Mum mentioned that you might want to and that it would be okay with her.
