I did write to her. Well, I wrote to tell her that I needed more time. But she wouldn't give me an extension. So I told her what I was going to say to Professor Lestrange. Well, most of it. It didn't make any sense to send the whole thing, even though I worked on it for weeks to sound just right. Because he doesn't like people to call him a hero or anything. Even though he is. So I left all that part out. I just said that I wanted to be a teacher because I didn't want to work in my step-father's shop. And that I didn't want to get left out from all the nift stuff over the summer.

Guess that wasn't a very good reason.

You should have written more about her as a teacher. It didn't have to be perfect, just convincing. And no, I shouldn't think anyone would be impressed if you said you wanted to go just so you wouldn't be stuck at home.

Wonder what Nott did to get chucked out in the first round?

I panicked. I kept hoping that Professor Lestrange would wake up, you know? And then suddenly it was the deadline.

Nott probably wrote his letter to Carrow.

Nott scares me a little, he probably scared them, too. Maybe he brought in that dead field mouse he was fiddling with at dinner the other day. I'm not sorry not to have to spend another week with him, I'll put it that way.

Malfoy told Finnigan who told me that his mum wouldn't let him invite Nott over after one time when he 'accidentally' killed a bird she had. I don't remember what kind.

Just don't say anything about him too loud where the Slytherins can hear. They may think he's odd, too, but they'll die before they let anyone outside the House know it!

You shouldn't worry so much about the little details, mate. I mean, spending an hour or so on spelling and grammar is good, but I remember you were up working on that way after I went to bed a few nights running. I saw, what, the third and fourth drafts? I meant it when I said it was fine, I really did. It was probably better than mine.

Still, Professor Sinistra said there's loads of ways to be a loyal member of the Protectorate, and we all know you work really hard.

Maybe if I don't have YPL next year I'll have more time to practice violin.

You are pretty snitch on that thing, from what I've heard! Mum signed me up for cello lessons when I was younger and all I could get out of it was an awful sawing sound.

Dad says cello's really hard, especially when you're small. It took him forever to get tall enough to reach all the way up and down the strings without having to stand up. But violin's hard too because the strings are smaller. I dunno.

Anyway. What sort of tests do you think we're in for next week?

They're saying all sorts of things about 'leadership,' which might mean we'll be working in teams? I can't even guess. It makes me nervous that I can't study, since the subject could be anything.
